Far Horizons Archaeological & Cultural Trips

By Patrick Leigh Posted on History

Far Horizons Archaeological & Cultural Trips offers more than 60 separate trips to virtually every corner of the globe. Latin America is its most prominent region, which is not surprising since the company was founded by a Mayan-studying archeologist. Far Horizons’ trips include “Peru: The Incans and their Ancestors,” “Easter Island and the Rock Art of Northern Chile” and “Hidden Maya Cities of the Yucatan.” Other trips include; “Iran: Empires of Everlasting Fires,” “Turkish Treasures,” “The Hidden Splendors of Syria: A Forgotten Land,” “An Archaeological Pub Crawl of Great Britain” and “The Riches of Scotland.”

A major component of each trip is the chance to interact with the local people. Many trips are scheduled to coincide with local or community festivals to experience the cultures firsthand. Meetings with local archeologists at their digs and residents in their own homes is an extra special way to really get an in depth cultural experience by comparing a civilization’s past with current society.

The company also maintains extensive local contacts in each destination and a philosophy of working closely with museums and historic sites. In addition, all of Far Horizons’ study leaders are required to be currently working in the destination country, providing participants up-to-the-moment information on the sites and societies they are visiting.

Group size is kept very small, with a maximum on most trips of 12 passengers, although average trip size is eight or nine. Small group sizes and insider contacts allow Far Horizons’ travelers access to sites that may be inaccessible to other larger groups. Frequently is able to arrange private museum and project visits as well.

The combination of culture and history, and the opportunity to form relationships with the people of today make a Far Horizon trip special. The company’s philosophy of donating to projects and nature reserves where it visits creates a win-win situation for both travelers and their destinations. Far Horizons is an ideal choice Cultural Travels Tour Host Pick of the Month.
