Geology and Terrain
Most of Acadia is on Mount Desert Island, the third-largest island off the coast of the continental United States. The park extends over both of them, but the most popular sights -- Sand Beach, Cadillac Mountain, and the Park Loop Road -- are on the eastern lobe. Additional sections are on Isle au Haut, a much smaller,...

Interpretive pamphlets provide information on natural and park history at selected points along the loop, which takes about 45 minutes to complete.

Acadia is lovely during any of New England's distinctly different seasons. Although summer is by far the most popular, it's by no means the only time to enjoy the park. From mid-May to late fall, Bar Harbor is swarming with tourists; expect higher lodging prices. On the other hand, summer is the best time to take advantage of shopping, dining out, and touring on Mount Desert Island; the town of Bar Harbor virtually shuts down in winter.
